What a fun Christmas potluck!

We started with a potluck dinner which had lots of yummy foods - no shortage of amazing dishes and desserts.

Then we had our mug rug exchange.  This involved many "involuntarily" relinquishing their mug/rug.  When it ended we got a picture of all the wonderful mug rugs, with mugs to match in a lot of cases.

Show and shares rounded out our meeting, demonstrating that our members have been busy.

At our meeting on Wednesday we:

  • signed up for our sew-in on Nov. 18.  If you haven't signed up contact Carly (csimon@live.ca)
  • we decided that we would celebrate at next month's meeting with a pot-luck and will begin at 6:00pm
Challenges launched:
  •  make a mug rug with a Christmas theme, or anything else, team it with a mug and wrap it for the December meeting.   All member that participate will get another mug and rug in the exchange.
  • Dona-Mae began the paint chip challenge. We blind-picked a multi-colour paint chip and will make either a post card, mug rug, placemat, wall hanging (your choice) using only the colours on the paint chip..  This will be due at the January meeting - some of us got "challenging" colours.  😱

Beginning of another Modern Quilting Year. First Meeting Wed. Sep. 6

As we begin our "new" quilting year with our first meeting on Wednesday, September 6 at 7:00pm it is time to renew our membership in the guild ($40).  Dona-Mae will be there to take your registration.

There are a few changes to tell you about.

Our 2 co-leaders are having major changes in their lives.  Lori is moving to Victoria for new opportunities and Mary will have a brand new baby to spoil.
We will need to have elections (or volunteers) at the October meeting to take the leader positions in the guild.

Also, our sew-in dates for the upcoming year have been arranged (thank you Lori H.). They are held on Saturdays from 10:00am-approx 4:00pm at the Nanaimo North Library.  The cost is $10 per sew-in and the dates are:
  • Sept 23
  • Nov 18
  • Jan 13
  • March 24
  • May 26
Don't forget to bring your show and shares.  We know that some of you have been very busy quilting over the summer and we are looking forward to seeing your project(s).

That's a lot to digest for our first meeting but, as always, it will be fun.

See  you then,

What do modern quilters do on a beautiful, balmy evening?

Why, have a picnic of course.

We had our summer picnic at Maffeo-Sutton park; modern quilting was displayed and as always, there was a LOT of good food, laughs and discussions.

Hello Fellow Quilting Friends!,

We have some fantastic news we want to share with you!  We have Jacquie Gering coming to Victoria on Thursday, May 25th.  We managed to snag her up prior to her visit to Vancouver on the 26th.  Now I do apologize to West Shore Quilt Guild as I know this is your regular meeting night.  In order for this opportunity to work out for us we had to change the date of our meet to a week later. We do want to extend and open invitation to all of your members to attend if they are wanting to sit in on Jacquie's trunk show.  We do have a $10 fee for MQG Victoria members and a $15 fee for visitors.  We do have limited seating and are offering it on a first come first serve basis.  We have included all of our special instructions in the email above/below. Free motion not for you? How about some "forward motion" quilting with the walking foot? It's time to get that walking foot out of the ditch, take it for a drive and see what that baby can really do! Jacquie Gering will be your guide as you work your way from walking foot basics to intricate marked designs as you master machine quilting with your walking foot.

Jacquie shares a comprehensive set of walking foot quilting basics that provide a solid foundation for quilting with ease, quality and creativity. She guides you through a series of test drives with your walking foot, allowing you to get acquainted with its features and set yourself up for success with your foot and your machine. Then you'll learn how to prepare and mark the quilt, prevent puckers while quilting, and manage large projects.

Jacquie teaches over forty walking foot friendly designs including channel quilting, matchstick quilting and quilting with decorative stitches. Thought that your walking foot could only be used for straight line quilting? Learn to use the walking foot with traditional designs including cables, clamshells, and orange peels or finish your quilt with intricate point to point designs like the boomerang and nested diamonds. Quilt graphic, innovative radiating designs. Learn to spiral and quilt concentric designs or use your newly developed skills to quilt unique designs with reserve.

You too can achieve the textures shared in Jacquie's vibrant, graphic quilts. With a toolbox of simple to complex designs you'll have the options you need to quilt on your home machine with designs that will support your piecing and create a harmonious marriage of piecing and quilting. With a walking foot, you'll find a level of control and success you never thought possible and you'll become as excited about the quilting as you are about your piecing.
From two pioneers of today's modern quilting movement, Quilting Modern teaches quilters how to use improvisational techniques to make graphic, contemporary quilts and quilted projects. Explore seven core techniques and multiple projects using each technique--all presented with detailed instructions. Also included is step-by-step direction from Jacquie Gering and Katie Pedersen on tools, materials, and quilting basics, as well as expert advice on color and design.
You can find us at 505 Marigold Road. Jacquie will be waiting for you inside the Boyscout Hall. We do ask that you please enter in through the front doors for this meeting.  We want everyone to have an equal opportunity for seating.  We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding!

Our May meeting - fun and informative

Karen, a lawyer, gave us a very spirited, humorous and informative update on copyrights, derivatives, etc. and how it impacts us as quilters.  In the U.S. the annual (2014)value of quilting was $3.76 BILLION.  That's right - $3.76 Billion---- and this is why intellectual property has become so important for quilters.

See the article from Susan Carlson (http://susancarlson.com/2017/05/06/copyright/)

For Show and Share Johann brought the quilt that she made from her daughter's t-shirts accumulated over the years that her daughter competed nationally and internationally.

Carly showed her "quilt-as-you-go" and there was much discussion on how that was achieved.
Carly also showed a set of placemats that she is making as a wedding present.  Lovely work.

Sew-in's are always fun!

Saturday's sew-in was fun with 5 of us working on our projects. Becky showed us how to make cross-cut blocks so you don't have to match the strips.  Yeahhh!

Our busy March meeting

Stacie Wilson, the President of the Victoria MQG visited us and extended an invitation to attend their Necessary Clutch workshop with Jill Spyker: TWO sessions on Saturday, March 18. #1 9am-12pm and #2 1pm-4pm $35 including pattern. If you would like to take this workshop check on their website http://www.mqgvictoria.com/p/workshops.html for the sign-up details.

We had an update on the "Spring" postcard challenge and you're reminded to mail your postcard by March 18 so recipients can bring them to the April meeting.

Carly demonstrated a few ways to quilt-as-you-go.  Carly uses diaper flannel as the backing for her quilt-as-you-go and then it doesn't require batting.

The challenge exercise was to take a magazine page that appealed to us and then to express it as a modern rendition.

Joy demoed templates that help with fussy cutting and square in square construction.  This demo was done with "smooshing" being involved.

Some of the results from the weekend Krista Hennebury workshops were shared.  Spectacular and inspiring,

Reminder that our next sew-in is on Saturday, March 25 at the Hammond Bay branch of the Library.  Sign up by contacting nanaimomqg@gmail.com

Our show and shares.  Awesome projects!
